Inequality can result in ‘dysfunctional societies' and marginalised groups feeling less equal.

Haralambos and Holborn: 2013

Recommendation 15 - the most effective way to meaningfully address disparities and inequalities for all those affected is to empower pupils to make more informed choices to fulfil their future potential

The Report of Commission on Race & Ethnic Disparities: 2022

Our story

The organisation was considered in 2017 after the Founder - Sharlene Birkin realised a need for a purposeful youth-group provision for young people.

She accepted that extra-curricular activities had become increasingly popular but she also recognised from her own experiences growing up in Radford that the opportunities of seeking to enjoy and extend certain skills outside of school often came with hefty financial commitments.

She frequently stumbled upon articles surrounding the rising concerns about inequality and low self-esteem in low socio-economic areas but believed in the power of knowledge, creativity and instilling high aspirations to overcome such barriers.

Although Sharlene has been fortunate enough to live a life filled with a diverse range of cultural and academic learning experiences she still works tenaciously to ensure that young people are encouraged and challenged in a positive way to realise and achieve ambitious goals in life. She therefore wanted to share her knowledge, skills and expertise by creating a safe, creative and social space for young people in the neighbourhood that is close to her heart.

Through years of research and collaboration with various professionals within the education and creative sector, Luminary Studios was launched in August 2023.
